The IRS has announced today that a new scam is trending. A criminal impersonating an IRS agent calls an unsuspecting taxpayer and demands verification of various personal/confidential information (social security number, bank account number) in order to process your current income tax return.
The full announcement can be read here: IRS Alert.
The IRS does not call (or e-mail) taxpayers! All IRS business is conducted by USPS mail unless you (the taxpayer) call the IRS.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, hang up. If you are worried, you can call the IRS at 800.829.1040 to verify if the call was legit.
